What is a Mandala?

Mandala means 'circle' in the Sanskrit language, and mandalas are sketched or painted in a circular frame. Mandala art has been used throughout the world as a creative process for personal and spiritual transformation.

To create an emotionally expressive mandala in this course you will draw a circle, fill the circle in spontaneously, letting the drawing, painting or collage emerge step by step in an intuitive way. When your mandala is complete, you will have holistic snapshot of what is emotionally going on within you right now through pattern, color and symbols. 

In this healing adventure you will:
 

~ Learn how to create spontaneous free-form mandalas by sensing for symbols that match your inner experience.

- Practice playing, loosening and freeing up your mandala process to allow for surprise and insight.

~ Practice deep rest in your intuitive mandala making process.

~ Learn how to "give" worry silence, and restore your mind to peace.

~ Practice the art of keeping your mind open to intuitive insight.

~ Recalibrate your nervous system to calm, confidence, and self-love.

Utilizing the Concept of Mandalas in Expressive Art:

The very nature of creating a mandala is therapeutic and symbolic. The shapes and colors you create in your mandala art therapy will reflect your inner self at the time of creation. Your instinct and feeling should inspire and guide you through the process of creation. Ultimately, you will be creating a portrait of yourself as you are when creating the mandala. So, whatever you are feeling at that time, whatever emotions are coming through, will be represented in your mandala art therapy.

As with most art therapy, it’s not about the final product…it’s about the journey. When you reach your destination, you will have a representation of something meaningful and personal…a snapshot of you for a brief moment in time expressed through your mandala.

Art Supplies Needed for this Course

~ Heavy paper or a sketch book

~ A variety of black drawing pens 

~ An assortment of colored markers

~ Oil Pastels

~ Magazines for cutting up.

~ Scrapbook and printed papers.

~ Glue stick, white glue and scissors

Steps to complete this assignment:

  1.  Draw a large circle on your paper.  Place aside. (You may even want to start a entire sketch book and frequently make new mandalas.  The designs will change depending what your emotional needs are.

  2.   Cut out shapes, small photos, words, colors or whatever else you feel like cutting out.  You may also use scrapbook paper which will give you many options for great designs..  Let your inspiration be intuitive.

  3. Place your shapes within your circle.  There is no right way or wrong way.  This is the healing part of the exercise.  Take your other art mediums, markers, paints, pastels, pens etc and design around your other elements..

  4. Don't overthink it.  Let your creativity run free.

  5. .  You may or may not finish your mandala in one session.  If you do not, go back to it when you feel lead to complete it.

  6.   Once done, look at it carefully.  It is interesting what your own intuitive art will reveal to you.  Keep it as a reminder and an inspiration.
